Nature Journals

A month ago I had the 3 middle ones start nature journals. We kicked off our first session by choosing their journals & then going on a walk. We used composition notebooks as I like how it all stays in one place, the hard cover and that it looks more like a journal. You can use anything really but I liked these best. I already had them on hand from shopping the back-to-school sales last year. We went on our walk. When we returned home I asked them each to pick a quiet spot by themselves. Then they were to sit and observe what they heard, smelled, saw and felt. The next step was to write these in their journals. They could also draw illustrations to go along if they liked.
Boo writing in her journal.

This is the spot Elvis chose to observe & write.

One of my favorite photos.

Bugsy had a little trouble finding a spot.  He finally settled into this nice, shady one.

Princess played while the others observe and wrote.

They wanted to share them with me after their time was up.  I enjoyed hearing about all they had observed & how much they enjoyed working in their journals.  I'm looking forward to many more quiet moments to think and to write throughout the summer.  I might even start one myself.

Beauty in the Granite State

Isn't this amazing? It was a large rock we saw down by the river.

This photo doesn't do this majestic butterfly justice. The blue dots are hardly showing up but were beautiful to see. We watched this amazing creature flit from flower to flower for some time. Fascinating!

These colors popped out from the tree. I don't think I have ever seen a red & green combined & this vivid. Absolutely gorgeous!

Walking the Trail

The weather has been fantastic this week! We went for a 2-mile walk on a popular walking/biking trail near home. The kids love that they can ride their scooters and bikes. Even Bugs was allowed to run free at the end of our walk when there were less people around. The exercise is good for all of us too. We are enjoying being outside again. The next few days are supposed to be rainy which means we will now appreciate the time we've had outdoors in the sunshine even more.

There was some leftover snow in a shady area.

Brave or Stupid? I've heard these often travel hand in hand.
Sweet Pea asked if I wanted to ride her bike. At first I refused but then thought to myself, "Why not amuse the children?" So off I went!

Are We Done Yet?
After 20 or more attempts at a photo I was bushed. My legs are feeling the pain today!

Big Sister
Since I had her bike Sweet Pea helped out Bugs. Here she is helping him "ride" her scooter. He wants to be a big kid so badly!
