APPLES, BANANAS & VITAMINS.....OH MY! ~ NUTRITION CHAPTER

We stayed home with colds today.  Well, the girls & I did.  The boys were still full of energy.  I was determined not to lose another complete day of school as we did on Tuesday.  The boys & I managed to finish our science module and even had fun doing it.  Win-win.  They always love hands on learning and we inserted as much as possible into our reading today.

First we read about proteins, bad fats, good fats, calories and energy.  Then we learned what that means in our every day lives.  The boys selected cans from the pantry and we talked about the nutrition labels.  They learned their importance and how to accurately read and understand them.  The second time around they went back to the pantry to select two new cans.  They had to guess which can had the most or least of specific categories without looking at the labels.  It was neat seeing how close they were in their guesses.

We then went on to learn about different vitamins.  They have been taking extra Vitamin C lately and were curious about it.  This experiment caught their attention.  To illustrate the "powers" of Vitamin C we did these two experiments.  First we cut up and apple.  On one slice we poured lemon juice which was our Vitamin C.  The other apple we left alone.

Here is Bugsy writing up the labels.

Next we sliced up part of a banana.  On 3 slices we sprinkled a crushed Vitamin C tablet.  The other slices were left plain.  We then waited to see what would happen to both our apples and our bananas.

We noticed that right away the apple with no lemon juice started to turn brown.  We learned that it is because of the oxygen.  The lemon juice is an antioxidant.  It stops the oxidation process and helps to keep the cell walls from breaking down.

The bananas did the same thing.  It was neat to see that the Vitamin C in both experiments, though in different forms, worked the same.

Our next experiment will be to test foods for Vitamin C.  We will do that one as soon as I buy some Iodine.  We're all looking forward to it.  =)  What experiments have you enjoyed and learned from lately?

Martin Luther King Jr. & Chocolate Study

Today was Martin Luther King Jr. Day & the boys weren't clear on who he was. SO we sat down & had a little study on him. What better day than today, right? Believe it or not it fit in well with our Civil War studies. The boys are getting a very good understanding about how people have been mistreated through history. We started our Chocolate Study today too. We are using an Amanda Bennett study. The boys were practically DROOLING as we learned about how chocolate is made and the history of Milton Hershey. He was a very interesting and generous man. I have a new found admiration for him.

Bugs doing his MLK worksheets from Enchanted Learning.

Princess was busy coloring.

The boys are both working hard.

Writing information always seals it into their minds much better than talking alone.

Work Central

Princess helped me sort the crayon bin.

We filled this entire bag with broken crayons.  We are saving them for a craft.

Princess made a caterpillar the other day with Sweet Pea.  She adores it.

She likes to take it everywhere she goes.  It was part of her 'Letter C' lesson.

The boys with their MLK booklets & the book we read today.

Now to work on our Chocolate Study.

What a delicious book!

This is a great book.  Full of information & fun to read.
The boys with the books we read today & their research from Day #1.

We're looking forward to Day #2 and learning even more!

Science Time at the Discovery Center

The Discovery Center had a science club afternoon. I thought it was going to be about math based on the description of the class & was excited to take Elvis. For those of you who don't know Elvis has a thing for numbers. He is a HUGE math fan! Well, it wasn't about math which was disappointing but the kids did get to explore outdoors and that was fun. It was the perfect weather for it too. Bugsy came along & enjoyed the exploration too.

First they explored the pond.

They really liked that they were allowed to touch.

There was a lesson about food chains. It was neat for the kids to see how everything is connected in one way or another.

After a couple of games about food chains we went back to explore some more.

Bugsy really took to the instructor. She was a little testy with him during their one-on-one which irritated me some but he didn't seem to notice. Overall it was a good time.

New Doos

I haven't cut the boys hair myself since they were each 2 years old or younger. I don't really feel confident styling it so we had them going to a barber. We haven't found a good one here yet. Plus lately our budget has needed to become even tighter. After much debating in my mind I decided to experiment with the new clippers Dave got for Christmas and see if I could indeed cut the boys hair and not have it turn out a nightmare. Elvis was quite hesitant at first. His reply was, "I don't want to be bald like Daddy!" Lol. I assured him he would not be bald and that I could make his hair be cut a little longer than Daddys' usually is. Finally after promising him $2 if he would allow me to cut his hair he agreed. Usually I would NOT pay my kids but would simply expect them to obey but in this I felt that it was important that he agree to participate. And that something be in it for him in case disaster struck. After all it would be HIM that would have to endure it in front of everyone in case I messed up. Some may disagree but this is how I felt and still feel. So off we went to Barber Mommy's chair!

I wanted to take some 'before' pics before the buzz. My ham here didn't have a simple pose in him. LOL!

Not sure where he gets this model attitude. What a nut!

This is my favorite. Isn't he a crack up?

Happy to be in the chair.....and still hamming it up.

To my complete surprise as soon as Bugs saw Elvis in the chair he declared he wanted his hair cut too! "My turn next!" he yelled. As soon as Elvis vacated the chair Bugs jumped right up.

My shorn sheep.
He is all set and quite pleased with his new doo. Boy was I relieved all turned out well!

Bugs' 'after' photo.
He did such a fabulous job sitting still in the chair & allowing me to move his head as I needed.

Another 'after' pic.
I am quite pleased with the results on both boys. These new clippers are great. I used the highest setting, #7. I think when the hot weather hits AND I feel more confident in my role as barber we will go for a lower setting but for now this worked very well. Since the clippers have already paid for themselves with the 2 haircuts Dave has had since we bought them the boys haircuts were FREE. Just my time & a little patience. Oh, and $2 for Elvis. Hee, hee. But even with Elvis' incentive to be paid I saved $28. I was really pleased to be able to contribute to our budget in this way.

The Days Before Christmas

Here are a few miscellaneous shots from the days leading up to Christmas Day.

Bailey

Sky Walker
Or as I like to call him, "Sky-Sky".

One night Dave spent some time with the boys making models. They were so excited!

Posing with their projects

Getting down to work

All my boys

All it needs now is paint!

My dear friend Megan sent us a package for Christmas. It was filled with this to-die-for delicious caramel popcorn drizzled with chocolate. There was also a homemade muffin mix which I am looking forward to mixing up. Last but not least she included a blanket for Baby that she stitched herself. It is gorgeous. Elvis loves how soft it feels. I can hardly wait to cuddle Baby in it. Thank you, Megan!
